Book: The Soul of a New Machine
- by Tracy Kidder
This is the story about the creation of the Eclipse MV/8000 alias Eagle, documented by a journalist present at Data General at the time (late seventies).
It is a worthwhile history lesson if one is into computers. It explains the technical concepts very nicely so this book can be understood by non-computer people, but it would hardly interest people outside the branch today. The people and the progress on the computer gets more fascinating along the way. I.o.w. it gets easier after the first 3 chapters :-)
It is also a book certain IT managers should read. Managers who doesn't know the difference between a draft horse and a race horse when they see one. On the other hand, this book would teach them how they could abuse us horribly without paying anything extra at all, and even make us grateful for it, so perhaps we should really be glad these people don't know their literature.
